This semester Bruno introduced us to the advanced tools of the fab lab and the computer programs to operate them.
This allowed us to directly implement newly learned fabrication skills into our design processes. I implemented these newly learned skills in designing a Surfboard, producing different joineries for the CODA workshop, fabricating ceramic pieces, and correctly mixing and ramming earth.
Cardboard Surfboards
Commonly surfboards are produced from polluting styrofoam. Assembling them from recycled cardboard offers a sustainable alternative:
CODA WORKSHOP
For the CODA workshop, we had to produce different connector systems. The final choice enables the user to control at a 3-axis angle. These angles were challenging to produce on the table saw, but in the end, we found a way.
Rammed Earth
As part of this semester, I learned how to correctly mix the dry mix of rammed earth and how to ram it. To do so, we used self-made rammers that we produced in the fab lab.
Ceramic
After our workshop on ceramic, glazing, and firing, I enjoyed practicing my new skill in making chopsticks, cups, an orange squeezer, garlic grinders, and egg cups:
