Deconstruct The Pavilion
The Serpentine pavilion by Franceis Kere consists of three architectural elements: Main Structure, Roof, and Envelope.
Main Structure Analysis
Taking inspiration from the great tree in Francis Kéré’s hometown of Gando under which members of the community meet to reflect on the day, Kéré’s design is based on creating this sense of community while connecting people with nature.
Wall – Envelope Analysis
The structure is a striking design, comprising four curved walls composed of prefabricated wooden blocks (colored blue), assembled into triangular modes with small apertures between them to give light and transparency to the building enclosure.
Roof – Canopy Analysis
A large overhanging roof canopy, detached from the walls, made of steel with a transparent skin (polycarbonate sheet), lined internally by timber brise soleil ceiling panels acting as shading elements. At the center of the canopy is a large oval opening, which in the rain will become a funnel channeling water into the heart of the structure to create a connection to nature.
Recreate The Pavilion
This project would aim to recreate and redesign the pavilion while taking advantage of computational tools to reiterate and at the same time be tangential to the essence of the pavilion.
