Self-organized Structure

00 CONCEPT

Nature chooses the most economical design, Form finding through an apparatus which settles into form according to the weights and forces and orientations it sets the desired model against gravity. The design is inspired by Frie otto.

The word locally means that if we look in a small region around any point on the surface, there’s no way to reduce the area in that small region. This means first that we no longer have to have a boundary on the surface. But there are also boundaries that will allow multiple different locally area-minimizing surfaces to span them.

The mathematical shape “the catenoid” made of a soap film. In every point on its surface its total curvature is zero, experiments by Frei Otto

The catenoid is the surface of revolution generated by the rotation of a catenary around its base. Since the mean curvature is zero at all points. The idea of a minimal surface is that if you take a given boundary curve, there is a surface with least area that has that boundary curve around the edge.
