New Ways Of Living

The new ways of living project aims to create a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor living spaces , promoting biodiversity and enhancing residents well-being. each apartment features expansive terraces designed with planting spaces. each terrace space is shaded by the terrace above it to reduce heat gain while maintaining daylight standards.

Goals

  • Minimize Solar Radiation
  • Maximize daylight penetration
  • Optimize outdoor terrace areas.

Formal Exploration

Design Transformation Strategy

Optimization

  • SOLAR RADIATION: Minimize exposure on building elevation (glass)
  • DAYLIGHT: Maximize indoor natural light
  • OUTDOOR Area: Optimize usable terrace space

High vs Low Performance

Galapagos run 1 :

  • low performance results showing fitness value of 1.92 so a ratio of 1.92 of daylight hours on all surfaces to 1 total solar radiation average.

Galapagos run 1 : notes

  • outdoor floor area calculating total area of all floor surfaces, interior floor space should be subtracted for accurate results relevant to optimization goals.

Galapagos run 1 :

  • high performance results showing fitness value of 1.98 so a ratio of 1.98 of daylight hours on all surfaces to 1 total solar radiation average.
  • higher value of Total daylight hours
  • larger outdoor area

Galapagos run 1 : notes

  • outdoor floor area calculating total area of all floor surfaces, interior floor space should be subtracted for accurate results relevant for optimization goals
  • column mass not computed into results (will impact daylight hours)

Galapagos run 1 : notes

  • curve shape optimized as a very simple geometry to cut down optimization time.

Galapagos run 2 : notes

  • column mesh added as context to show more accurate results, should reduce total radiation, but should also reduce daylight hours.
  • more accurate results expected

Galapagos run 2 :

  • low performance results showing fitness value of 2.58 so a ratio of 2.58 of daylight hours on all surfaces to 1 total solar radiation average.
  • slightly lower values of Total daylight hours (2.33h) to currently 2.38 hours, even with the addition of column geometry
  • 36143 m2 of outdoor space divided by 48 apartment units so each apartment gets a total of 752 m2 of outdoor space ( division includes portion of green roof outdoor space)

Galapagos run 2 : notes

  • outdoor floor area calculating outdoor space only
  • column mass computed into results will impact daylight hours
