This is an architectural project nestled in the vibrant city of Barcelona, specifically in the district of Sant Adrià de Besòs. Our design is a testament to the synergy between thermodynamics and sustainable living, aiming to create a harmonious environment that adapts to the dynamic Mediterranean climate.

The core concept of our project revolves around a thoughtful integration of natural elements to optimize thermodynamic efficiency. We have strategically employed openings throughout the building to harness the power of airflow, fostering a continuous exchange of fresh air. This not only ensures proper ventilation but also serves as a dynamic mechanism for dehumidification and cooling during the scorching summer months.

In our pursuit of sustainable design, these openings double as shading devices, providing respite from the intense Spanish sun. The calculated placement facing the south east allows for the creation of shaded areas, shielding the interior spaces from excessive heat, while still permitting ample natural light. This duality of purpose—dehumidification and shading—contributes to a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.

Moreover, our architectural design incorporates elements that harness the sun’s energy during the colder months. The openings are strategically positioned to allow for maximum sun exposure, facilitating heat gain and natural warmth during winter. This thoughtful approach to seasonal adaptation enhances the building’s thermal performance and minimizes the need for artificial heating systems.

In essence, our project in Sant Adrià de Besòs is a celebration between architecture and thermodynamics, showcasing a dynamic interplay of elements that prioritize both human comfort and environmental responsibility. A space where the ebb and flow of nature seamlessly integrate with the built environment, creating a sustainable housing, industry and commercial areas in Barcelona.

Figure 1. Zoning and location analysis

In Figure 1, we observe the various land uses in Sant Adrià de Besòs. Our plot is situated in the northeast area of this district, specifically in an industrial zone. Due to the housing challenges in Barcelona, we can consider this area as a potential space for integrating various uses. This includes incorporating industry within the city limits and integrating it into the urban environment, coexisting harmoniously with residential, public, and commercial areas.

Energy Conceptual strategies

We have developed a prototype that expresses the solutions we have identified as beneficial for the project. As mentioned earlier, we have incorporated openings – in this instance, open patios and gardens – facilitating airflow throughout the entire building, thereby cooling it down and providing protection from the sun during the summer. Additionally, during winter, the shading system can be adjusted to enhance solar heat gain, effectively warming up the space.
