‘PREFABRICATION THROUGH THE CLOSED-LOOP PRODUCTION OF GRASS, CHARCRETE, AND BIOPLASTIC, FED THROUGH A SYSTEM OF ORGANIC WASTE’
abstract
Our project explores the integration of organic waste recycling into architectural systems, creating a co-living habitat that embraces circular design principles. Situated in Barcelona’s Poblenou @22 district, the initiative addresses the city’s densification and the lack of a comprehensive recycling process for organic waste. Our proposed facility transforms organic waste into construction materials such as biochar, produced through pyrolysis, and nutrient-rich compost from the collected organic waste.
Dome-stic introduces a time-sensitive architectural framework, leveraging fast-growing bamboo as a renewable structural material. Bamboo serves as a dual-purpose resource: first as a construction material for co-living spaces, and later as a source of high-quality biochar once it begins to decay. The metabolic system incorporates waste collection, processing, and material fabrication, fostering a closed-loop ecosystem.
By reimagining organic waste as a valuable resource, the project challenges traditional notions of material scarcity and urban waste management. It positions architecture as an active agent in addressing environmental challenges, transforming waste into a catalyst for innovation in sustainable living.
