Flow aims to investigate the intricate relationship between fabric materials and wind flow dynamics. Utilizing computational design tools, it seeks to create a shaded area on the rooftop of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC).

The design endeavors to establish a semi-covered space where individuals can unwind, enjoy meals, and relax. By offering partial shade from the sun, it seeks to strike a balance between shelter and openness, allowing sunlight to filter through and create an uplifting atmosphere. This approach aims to foster an environment that encourages social interaction and leisure activities while remaining connected to the surrounding natural elements.

SITE ANALYSIS

The design prioritizes larger openings on the approach side and horizontal sides, maximizing views and interaction with the surroundings. Conversely, openings on the opposite side are deliberately minimized to ensure privacy from neighboring buildings. This thoughtful arrangement maintains a balance between openness and seclusion, creating a harmonious environment that respects both communal engagement and individual privacy.

FORM FINDING

WORKFLOW DIAGRAM

The project initiates with a planar mesh that undergoes inflation using Kangaroo simulation. The anchor points for this inflation process are strategically determined through meticulous site analysis. The pavilion has a foundational waffle structure crafted from wood, providing a sturdy framework. Fabric panels are hung from specific areas of the waffle structure using hooks, which are bolted at the intersections of the waffle grid. This design allows for versatile configurations of the fabric panels, enabling the creation of dynamic spaces within the pavilion.
