Concept

Draw inspiration from the lighting effects in David Bowie’s live performances, mainly the stuttering, fragmented, and dynamic atmosphere they created. My design concept seeks to amplify this spatial experience, crafting a shattered, mosaic-like sense of space that immerses people in a unique and transformative environment.

Prototype

I created a mirrored wall installation composed of modular mirror units. At first glance, it appears as a large, seamless mirror. However, as a person approaches, the wall reacts to their presence by adjusting the movement of its individual mirror units based on the distance between the person and the surface. Units closer to the person exhibit smaller degrees of extension and rotation, while those farther away move more dynamically, creating the illusion of the space wrapping around them. Additionally, the installation integrates controllable lighting, adjusting brightness, timing, and color to enhance the spatial experience.

Schematic

The first ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance between the mirror units and the person. The second ultrasonic sensor detects the distance between the person and the endpoint wall to control the lighting. A temperature sensor is employed to determine if the detected object is a person, thereby activating the installation.
