Through the 3 digital fabrication methodologies the projects that follow aim to use the limitations and capabilities of each system to create a vertical architectural system which serves function apart from just aesthetics. The various functions served are from Natural lighting control, Sound Mitigation and Air temperature control.

Laser cutting – Gothic Funk

This laser cutting exercise aim to explore the possibilities of facade systems that can be achieved with the use of the “Kerfing” design strategy. Kerf bending is the process of cutting a number of slots into a piece of material that allow it to bend. Since the demonstration was done in a smaller scale the primary material for the facade element was polypropylene which was design keeping modularity in mind such that it can be repeated as many times as needed. This project was inspired by the “Spatial Enclosure” designed by AA/ETH – Zurich.

The project aims to be a dynamic facade system which has a Flexed and Unflex position. In the flexed position the installation is retracted and lets in more light into the building system and in the un-flexed position the light is limited.

3D Printing – Cool Coral

The proposed project aims to capitalize on the venturi effect to be a facade system with a cooling component. The Venturi effect is the reduction in fluid pressure that results when a fluid flows through a constricted section (or choke) of a pipe. The concept was to create a panel where air is forced from a larger opening through to a smaller opening resulting in a temperature drop in the air.

CONCEPT

The form was inspired by corals in the sea which have a tubular formation in nature. This form inspiration was implemented with the idea of the venturi effect to create a facade panel which could have uses as an interior partition or a facade system that covers exhausts of a ventilation system.
