The Art of Balance: Prototyping a Tensegrity Stool
For our latest project at Valldaura, we set out to design and build a stool that defies convention. The result? A tensegrity stool that creates the captivating illusion of a floating seat.
What is Tensegrity?
Tensegrity—short for tensile integrity—is a structural principle that relies on a balance of tension and compression. In our stool, cables work together with the mass of our design to create a delicate equilibrium, giving the seat its seemingly gravity-defying appearance.
From Concept to Prototype
Our journey began with sketches and calculations to understand the mechanics behind tensegrity. To bring our ideas to life, we laser-cut the prototype components. This step allowed us to test the design’s structural integrity and refine the placement of critical elements such as cables and connectors. This project offered us an opportunity to learn the process preparing files for laser-cutting and operating the machine.
Refining the Design
The prototype revealed valuable insights about material behavior under tension and compression. With this knowledge, we are now preparing for the final build. The main components of the stool will be precision-cut using a CNC machine, ensuring strength and accuracy for the finished piece.
Next Steps
The prototype served as a crucial learning tool, guiding our decisions for the final design. The process of prototyping has taught us the importance of iteration in design and has given us a deeper appreciation for the balance of forces that make tensegrity possible.
