This proposal envisions a pavilion at Plaça Nova, inspired by the interplay between structured grid systems and fluid, organic pathways. Designed to adapt to the dynamic needs of its users, the pavilion offers a versatile space that fosters connection and individual expression. With its modular design and open, flexible layout, the pavilion encourages movement and interaction, creating a harmonious environment where both unity and personal expression can thrive. At its core, the pavilion serves as a dynamic and adaptable space, inviting people to engage with the space and each other in new and creative ways.
Plaça Nova, located in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, is a dynamic space where history and modernity converge. Surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Barcelona Cathedral and remnants of the ancient Roman walls, including the Barcino gate, the square embodies the city’s layered cultural identity. Its stone-paved surfaces and medieval-meets-modern architecture create a unique backdrop, while contemporary sculptures, like the Homage to Picasso, add a modern artistic touch. As a vibrant pedestrian hub, it attracts locals, tourists, and artists, offering a lively intersection of history, culture, and urban activity.
REFERENCE : Serpentine Pavilion / Sou Fujimoto
We drew inspiration from Sou Fujimoto’s Serpentine Pavilion for its innovative use of structure and space, where the boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve, creating a dynamic and immersive environment. The pavilions open, airy design and emphasis on human interaction resonate with the idea of fluidity and adaptability, qualities that align with the vision for a space that fosters connection and expression at Plaça Nova.
CONCEPT
The pavilion at Plaça Nova seeks to bridge Barcelona’s historical essence with modern adaptability. Inspired by Sou Fujimoto’s interplay of light and space and the modularity of voxel cubes, the design reimagines the site as a dynamic gathering space. Plaça Nova, surrounded by rich history and urban vibrancy, becomes a canvas for blending structured geometry with fluid interaction, fostering community engagement and celebrating the city’s evolving identity.
PSEUDO CODE
Final Geometry
Sustainability is integral to the design, with lightweight, modular materials enabling flexibility in construction, disassembly, and potential relocation. The pavilion’s adaptable structure allows it to align with environmental and spatial considerations, ensuring it integrates seamlessly into its urban context.
More than a visual installation, the pavilion invites engagement and reflection. It transforms Plaça Nova into a dynamic space for cultural appreciation and community connection. By celebrating the Cathedral’s legacy through a modern lens, the pavilion fosters a dialogue between past and present, reinforcing Barcelona’s identity as a city that evolves while cherishing its heritage.
