The industrial warehouse building what was  renovated and adapted to be a school with a variety of classrooms, offices, workshops and exhibition area.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is a globally recognized research and educational institution based in Barcelona, Spain. It focuses on the future of architecture, design, and technology, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, digital fabrication, computational design, and urban innovation.

Designing a pavilion on the roof of such school need to focus on technology and fabrication as well as sustainability.

Given the collaboration opportunities between courses as well as nationalities the pavilion needs to focus on bringing students and faculty together.

Form Finding Single Mesh

At the first stages of form finding and experimented with single mesh and variety of  forces, loads and anchor irerations.  This stage helped me to understand how

Form Finding Double Mesh

Next stages of firm finding was to mirror the mesh and create a double dome. The sun exposure was pretty similar to single mesh but the form behavior where two meshes join was unpredictable.

Growth Simulation

Part of design experimentation was creating a algae pipe to locate i the roof on the pavilion.
Current site is lucking greenery and taking in consideration iaacs passion for sustainability and new technology, the school’s rooftop has to reflect it. The algae pipe follows the previous sun analysis and experiments with design that prioritises top of the pavilion to be exposed to sun as much us possible. This was achieved tough unequal curve division with most points in the top if the curve.
