Keys have become obsolete. With the exponential growth of technology there has come a time for new alternatives. Some exist such as fobs, cards or keypads, but those still come with the same issue: the opportunity for them to be stolen or lost. So how about a solution that requires ownership of absolutely nothing, but the password in your memory. Introducing, SENTRA:

In the dimly lit streets of Barcelona, I’ve discovered a problem. Typically each resident here has between 2-3 sets of keys, and once the sun is down I’ve seen countless tenants along my block struggle to enter their homes all because there’s barely any light, and the keyhole appears to be evasive. I wanted to create a lock system that not only removes the need for a key, but emits light. With the 8×8 MAX7219 Module, I am able to create a visual password pad that glows upon arrival due to the Ultrasonic Sensor.

When the user is with 40cm, the LED panel turns on, allowing for the user to use the joystick to swiftly input their code which triggers the servo motor to turn 90 degrees, and viola, the door is able to open. I coded in a 5 second delay to allow for the user to open at their leisure and once the sensor detects no motion, the servo motor turns back to initial position and the LED panel turns off.
