The SunTrail Pavilion was conceived as a solution to address the limited shading options in expansive urban spaces. Nestled within the prominent Plaza del Mar in Barcelona, this pavilion is strategically positioned at the primary pedestrian intersection of the plaza, a popular spot for individuals seeking respite while enjoying views of the beach and seafront.
Employing computational tools in its design, the pavilion aims to optimize shading throughout the day in the primary seating area of the plaza. This is achieved without obstructing the picturesque views or impeding the refreshing sea breeze. The pavilion’s form is intricately shaped by the movement of the sun around the plaza, and it incorporates responsive light materials that adapt to the changing sun angles throughout the day.
