Re-thinking ‘Serpentine Pavilion 2017 ‘ as a Media Pavilion that represents an idea of new communication. As a part of the task original pavilion was deconstructed into three main architectural elements: structure, roof and envelope. Each student in the group had to pick one element to re-design it and create a code.

Design Analysis

Elements set

Corresponding structural elements  to its functions.

Cultural aspect is presented by light. Roof canopy is covered by the transparent structure, which allows sunlight to enter the space. Panels create dynamic shadow effect on the interior spaces. In the evening, the canopy becomes a source of illumination.

Social role of an object is driven by the function of the pavilion as a central meeting point. Along the envelop goes bench for sitting.

Sustainable feature lays in the water collection system.  While raining water collects on the roof into and then passes through a drainage system in the floor for later use in irrigating the nearby parkland.

Design logic

The main source of inspiration for author of the pavilion was a tree.

“In Burkina Faso, the tree is a place where people gather together, where everyday activities play out under the shade of its branches”.

Fabrication logic

In the construction of the pavilion were used modular components.

By creating parametric model and transferring it into 3D virtual and augmented reality environments, designers experienced simulations before physical testing.

Computational logic

Developing structure based on loft surface.

Step 1– Creating a base curve and moving it, scaling it and lofting to create a base form.

Step 2– Creating a grid by offsetting and dividing the surface and interconnecting the points.

Step 3– Creating Panels.

CONCEPT

Author of the pavilion saw a tree as a “symbol of storytelling and togetherness”. In his culture a tree is a place for socializing. But today communication is going through social media platforms. The suggestion is to re-imagine a pavilion as a media pavilion with led panels installation and a space “to connect”. The more people connected to it, the brighter leds are.

Design solution

Re-designing pavilion key elements

Pseudo code- Script 1 (Structure) | Anastasija Vidovic

Step 1– Make a loft surface to define pavilion shape and recieve a base points for structure development

Controlled parameters: ellipse size, ellipse scale, form height, number of points in surface division

Step 2– Transform lower part into the seating place for the people.

Lower part

Step 3– Create beams in the upper part

Upper part
