The project Optimizing ultra-thin Concrete elements Spacing for Maximum Visual Access experiments the impact of ultra-thin concrete elements in a built space particularly in the realm of visual access. With the help of computational tools like ladybug Vision analysis its impact on Performance is evaluated.
Spider webs are one of the best inspiration for various structural and thin structures. Where the web is known for its lightweight, with an outstanding wind resistance and prey- catching capabilities. Thus inspiring many architects and structural engineers.
Ultra thin concrete helps to overcome column and beam free space. Regardless, it comes with the restriction of span limit. Thus involving challenges
The primary goal for the line project was to maximize the daylight entering the building. Thus the inward stepping of floors on upper level is seen.
The line project composes of strategies. Such as introducing defined structural core walls in order to define housing units. Thin concrete wall, roof and facade structures to maximize the daylight in interior space.
Structural grid set up involves 3 measures. Firstly the core walls that separate the houses , followed by interior walls which acts a boundaries for the rooms in the house. Finally the shaft core to handle the service for the unit.
The grid set up of the line project helped as base structure for defining walls in my project. However for analysis the interior walls were allowed to move in X or Y plane To increase the vision ( But the range is set accordingly). Thus respecting the minimum dimensions required for a space.
Facade stiffener helps to hold the roof in place. The pattern of the stiffener placement is inspired from the webs. Where the spacing dimensions range from 0.5 to 5 meters. In my project this element is also set up for optimization. To study whether this elements have drastic impact on the visual access.
For the project the roof in not set for optimization ( Does not involve any movement in any plane). As allowing roof to twist, rotate will lead to impact the structural integrity of the structure.
Conclusion
- A significant movement in the interior walls help to increase the average View percentage.
- Regardless of walls the facade stiffeners spacing also contribute in affecting the view percentage. Nonetheless it is not significant in improving/ Reducing the View percentage.
