Research question:

How can a material be used in restoration of the existing buildings in the region of Terres De l’Ebre which is beneficial for the future ecology whilst creating industries of extraction of that material without depleting the ecology?

Abstract of the proposal:

The project explores how the abundant geological materials of Terres de l’Ebre, particularly stone and lime, can form the basis of a regenerative local industry. Historically, these materials shaped the architecture of the region, yet today their ecological and economic potential remains underused.

Proposal is to design a small-scale, solar-powered lime-slaking facility that transforms excess calcium from the soil into a sustainable construction binder for restoring abandoned stone buildings. This system not only addresses a technical challenge, how to produce lime without depleting resources, but also establishes a circular exchange between land and architecture, creating jobs, restoring habitats, and reactivating the region’s material intelligence.
