United Kingdom Pavilion, Dubai by Es Devlin

The UK Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, serves as a platform for contemplating the message humanity would convey to advanced civilizations in space as it is themed “Innovating for a Shared Future”. Designed by Es Devlin OBE, the architectural centerpiece is a 20-meter-high cone-shaped structure made up of rows of protruding slats that extend outwards from one central point to form a circular façade. Crafted from sustainably sourced cross-laminated timber from Italian and Austrian forests, the design maximizes quality and safety standards by off-site manufacturing and assembly.

Parametric Analysis of the Pavilion

Along the grid constructed on the surface of the circle, there are varying line sizes. In an alternating manner, the rectangles being built follow the behavior of the lines, which change sizes along the geometry of the circle. The rectangles are placed on the grid, with their origin points starting from the right or the left. This happens because the lines are flipped in a way that creates an intercalated pattern.
