Concept

  • Blooms is a sculptures created through 3D printing, designed to exhibit animation when rotated under a strobe light. In contrast to a 3D zoetrope that animates incremental changes in a sequence, a bloom functions as a singular, self-contained sculpture. The animation effect in the bloom is achieved through successive rotations based on the golden ratio, phi (?), the same ratio observed in nature for generating spiral patterns in objects like pinecones and sunflowers. The rotational speed and strobe rate are synchronized, causing a flash with each 137.5° turn (angular version of phi). Each bloom’s distinct form and behavior are determined by a unique parametric seed referred to as a instead of using a strobe, the camera’s short shutter speed captures individual frames of the rotating sculpture.
