Beyond Verticality

An Exquisite Corpse Report on Urban Form ABSTRACT IntroductionWith our work in this term we produced a multitude of drawings and images, watched and analyzed multiple movies, read multiple texts and came up with iterations and speculations. The common through line of all of these was the exploration of the nature of beyond-vertical forms of … Read more

Forces of Nature

Self-organized Structure 00 CONCEPT Nature chooses the most economical design, Form finding through an apparatus which settles into form according to the weights and forces and orientations it sets the desired model against gravity. The design is inspired by Frie otto. The word locally means that if we look in a small region around any … Read more

Post Skyscraper – Tower Deviations

A Speculative Catalogue of Programs, Structures, and Forms INTRODUCTION Abstract Skyscraper is a typology occured in specific conditions of capitalism that became a universal tool for urban development or a “large scale architectural machine” as Ciro Najle characterizes it in his The Generic Sublime text. But what are the mechanisms of this machine? Contemporary culture … Read more

CO2 Flakes

CO2 Flakes Planetary transformations caused by human activity lead to necessity of large scale interventions to protect us and surrounding environment. This work uses speculative approach to think of possible strategies to supplement our habitats with carbon capturing system. We propose to use low-tech hot air balloon technology to build a protective cloud over the … Read more

DRIVING TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

THE FUTURE OF PARKING In this one-term seminar of Decarbonise built environment the main goal was to develop carbon-capturing strategies and study how can we shift to renewable energies. In this particular project, Barcelona city was taken as a built environment, and based on that we developed urban planning strategies and parking design strategies. COSMOGRAM … Read more

POST-BIGNESS

A critical, speculative graphic essay in three steps Chapter 01: Critical Analysis A critical analysis of case studies through the lens of Kiel Moe’s ‘A Case for a More Literal Architecture.’ This project seeks to critically deconstruct the element of abstraction on an urban scale through an analysis of readings from Kiel Moe’s “A Case … Read more

BREATHING CARBON

A SYSTEM FOR URBAN DECARBONIZATION Breathing Carbon emerges as a response to the pressing need for sustainable urban infrastructure that addresses climate change and promotes ecological resilience. By integrating biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from biomass waste, into the concrete mixture, we aim to harness its carbon sequestration properties, thus contributing to global efforts in … Read more

Nest

This project explores the relationship between raw wood and standard timber through active bending. A series of, 45x45x130mm, timber joint were developed in order to connect and actively bend raw wood sticks.Relying on both standardized and customized digital construction methods, the structure considers scalability, ease of install, and natural strengths and weaknesses of the material. … Read more

ALTER-VERTICALITY

In the field of architecture, verticality is often considered the ultimate achievement, the culmination of various attempts, experiments, conceptual speculations, and styles. Architects such as Yona friedman, Rem Koolhaas, Peter Cook have investigated this concept resulting in questionable outcomes. Our analysis explores their work, examining its pure geometry with speculative experimentation. This concept is exemplified … Read more

FROM WASTE TO TAP

REIMAGINING WATER TREATMENT INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGH BIO-BASED SOLUTIONS PROJECT OVERVIEW WATER STRESS Due to the climate change, inefficient irrigation systems for agriculture, population growth and inefficient water infrastructure, the water stress in the world is increasing. But we question ourselves if water is really a scarce resource or is it just the issue of how the … Read more

Re-clay(m)

The old builds the new Manifest Can we transform construction waste? Can brick waste be a potential upcycled material in an structurally optimized system? Two main factors, the huge amount of CDW and the importance of brick production in Spain, gives us the decision to select our material, the brick waste. We attempt to propose optimized solutions … Read more

THE FOREST PAVILLION

22/23 MAA01 program COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN G07 “FORCES OF NATURE” The “Forest Pavilion” has a computer generated form composed of multi pipes, where the parameters are based on form finding strategies of point collision (kangaroo parameters), these forms are then once again processed (through kangaroo) to create angularity and turned into strips for digital fabrication. STATE … Read more

Forces of Nature

This project explores the use of various physics simulations using Kangaroo in order to reach a structurally viable design proposal for the IaaC rooftop. The design relies on a combination of specific behaviors (below) that have been calibrated to achieve the desired form.

Forces of Nature

HYPERBOLIC PARABOLOID ROOF This research project in the field of architecture aims to investigate the application of physics simulations in the form-finding process of designing live-interactive installations using Kangaroo, located in IAAC’s rooftop. The design strategy is creating a simple geometry based on forces in compression and tension on different points. The pavilion’s sail-like plane … Read more

FORCES OF NATURE: BLUE SADDLE ROOF

This project was developed in the Computational Design Seminar with the goal of proposing a new installation for the roof of IAAC’s main building using parametric design through Grasshopper and Kangaroo components. The resulting structure aims to improve the quality of the open area, adding shade, light, and shadow effects and creating a base for … Read more

Digital woodcraft

Exploring the unique properties of timber and the fabrication methods associated with it, enabling us to work with complex geometries and find appropriate strategies to realize them. We started out looking at different situations to apply our geometry and potentially make a gapahuk (a building made of wooden materials, originally intended for emergency accommodation), forest … Read more
