Castellated RE-USE

INTRODUCTION As part of the Structural Design Essentials Workshop, our team explored alternative beam designs for Alejandro Aravena’s Quinta Monroy project. Using reclaimed timber, we designed and analyzed a castellated beam to support vertical growth. Both digital simulations with Karamba3D and physical tests were conducted to evaluate its structural performance and sustainability. SKETCHES Quinta Monroy … Read more

Stability Split

Stability Split project explores sustainable construction using scavenged materials and recycled wood for a structural beam. In the first phase, a case study of the Google headquarters in London was analyzed using Karamba software to explore structural efficiency and redesign its system. Two design options—arched and stacked—were proposed as alternatives to improve structural performance and … Read more

Palette Beam

For the creation of our recycled beam we chose to repurpose parts of a wooden pallet that we found on the street, transforming discarded material into a functional structural element. This approach not only demonstrates the potential of upcycling in construction but also highlights sustainability by reducing waste and giving new life to materials that … Read more

Portal Frame Structure

The Portal Frame structure represents a modular roofing solution characterized by the integration of various portal frames along a longitudinal series. This design facilitates efficient assembly, disassembly, and reassembly processes, enhancing adaptability to diverse environmental conditions and functional requirements. Notably, the frames are engineered to optimize natural lighting and shading within the structure. Furthermore, their … Read more

Safe Maps

How can AI be used to identify potential safety risks in the city and provide real-time mapping and risk analysis? Safety is a collective priority When using this platform, citizens can both better navigate the existing urban system while also helping drive positive and effective change towards a safer and more secure built environment. Additionally, … Read more

PHY_SLIME_

slime molds a.ka. physarum Slime molds display a unique growth form characterized by efficient “hunting”  behaviour and remarkable problem-solving abilities. These organisms form intricate structures for spore production, showcasing adaptive behaviours without a centralized nervous system. Their ability to solve complex problems and optimize growth patterns in order to find nutrient sources has sparked scientific … Read more

ChromaEnergon

Energy Phenomena In the machine room model, Convection serves as the primary mechanism for transferring heat from the hot plate to the tubes containing thermochromic fluids. This convective process affects the temperature of the thermochromic liquid within the tubes, which in turn changes the chroma i.e, color intensity of the room, thereby influencing the circadian … Read more

ANT FORAGING PATTERNS / ANT COLONY OPTIMISATION

Ant foraging pattern is the foraging cycle of ants in which ants leave their nest to find a food source until an optimal path is found and then convey all of the food to their nest. In computer science and operations research, the ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO) is a probabilistic technique for solving computational problems which can be reduced to finding good paths … Read more
