CONCEPT

The project was designed to be an urban furniture that maps the city’s pollutions: air pollution and sound pollution. It is a design installation that aims social awareness regarding the environment people are exposed to in big and busy city centers.

The benches’ side lights, triggered by the air quality sensor, are always on, providing a feeling of safety and comfort for those who are passing by or using it. The main lights represent the air quality, and vary in 2 ways: BLUE (clean air) and RED (chemicals in the air).

The WHITE lights, bellow the seats, represent the sound pollution, blinking slower or faster, depending on the intensity of the surrounding sound.

OPERATING DIAGRAM

Those kinds of pollution can cause health issues, such as breathing problems, sleeping disturbs, stress and anxiety. In city centers, where the traffic is more intense, and the population is more dense, this visual approach is important to prompt discussions and consciousness about the impact of these pollutants on health and well-being, in addition to to make these threats visible.

URBAN DATA

It can be a powerfull tool to data managers and urban planners, to gather valuable insights into pollution patterns and their impact on public spaces, and also as a reference to identify areas with high environmental quality, providing a foundation to inspire future projects. The data collected from this furniture can serve as a crucial resource for urban reforms and provide more confort to those who work, live of are only passing by these places.

ENCOURAGE CHANGE

The project intends to encourage communities, policymakers, and individuals to take action to reduce pollution levels, advocating for cleaner air and quieter environments. Awareness-raising initiatives like this can be pivotal in fostering a sense of responsibility and collective action towards creating healthier and more sustainable urban spaces.
