SITE AND EXISTING BUILDING

Egypt, often reverently hailed as the “Mother of All Lands,” stands as one of the oldest and most influential civilizations in the vast chronicle of human history. Its legacy is not merely a collection of ruins or artifacts; it is a living narrative. The location of our project is not a physical address on a map, but rather a journey deep into this profound historical continuity—an exploration of the very essence of Egyptian identity that transcends time.
Flicking through the intricate tomb paintings, monumental architecture, and a history spanning thousands of years, we encountered a fascinating hypothesis: there exists a life-long palette of color tones that seems to be not just painted on walls, but intrinsically curved inside the Egyptian DN
A.

  • Existing building is listed as historical building and we have to preserve the existing structure
  • enhancing the building performance required re designing some building parts such as roof
  • being a focal point in the urban fabric of the city the new design should represent the identity of the city

DESIGN CONCEPT

The objective was to transform the existing historic roof market of Bab El-Louk in Cairo through new optimized parametric design while maintaining the existing steel frames

  • by studding the performance of existing roof we found it gains big amount of heat though sun radiation .
  • we start think about changing the shape of roof int passive deign the protect sun radiation and allow for north light
  • new geomatical shape of roof will use anchors of old structure as supports

PARAMETRIC METHODOLOGY

For defining the roof geometry based on certain grid we chose 3 parameters ,fist the grid deformation sizes of the panel in y direction ,second the range of roof height to vary between 3 m to 10 m this will help in creating self shaded geometrical shape and third parameter is the rotation of the panels in certain area to create openings for day light and it range from 15 to 30 degree .

EVOLUTIONARY OPTIMIZATION

To define optimum solution we used wallacie to run evolutionary optimization inside grasshopper by defining fitness objectives as lowest amount of heat radiation highest amount of day light , maximizing roof height and minimizing roof total area

COLOURS VS PENALIZATION

To define the characterization of the new roof, we utilized the triangle as a fundamental base shape to create dynamic movement within the architectural design. We successfully introduced a complex arrangement of different sizes of triangles, deploying four distinct color tones carefully derived from the authentic, symbolic Egyptian color palette, precisely as we previously highlighted in our proposal brief.

INTERIOR EXPERIENCE& ZONING

The design fuses modern elegance with Egyptian heritage, featuring sandy beige, terracotta, and ochre for warmth, accented by turquoise and deep blue for vibrancy. Gold details add opulence. Zoning transitions from light, airy public spaces to rich, intimate private areas, creating harmony while honoring Egypt’s cultural and natural identity.
